Should I send flowers or not? It is never easy comforting a relative, friend or associate who has lost a loved one. It can be difficult and confusing for someone to find the best way to express their feelings at a time of loss. Adding to the confusion are the changing trends in how the loss of a loved one is commemorated. Services and visitations are now typically limited to one day, or even just a few hours, if they occur at all. An increasing number of cremations has resulted in shorter, or no memorial services, being held.
Traditionally, funeral flower arrangements are sent to the funeral home, church, or chapel to be displayed during the visitation and service. However, this does not mean that flowers should not be sent if no service is held.
Flowers celebrate a persons life, as well as comfort the living. The message they send is very personal and powerful, and aid in the grieving process. In situations where there is no service held, sending a sympathy flower arrangement to the bereaved family's home is a way to comfort and offer support to them during a very difficult time.
Here's an alternative way to use sympathy flowers - one that will be truly appreciated.
When someone you know has lost a loved one, immediately send a card acknowleding their loss. A couple of weeks later, after the activity and stress of the funeral has subsided, send a small flower arrangement to their home. Include a message that simply says "I'm thinking of you and am here for you". You'll be surprised how appreciated your thoughtfulness will be.
